The story of Steven Avery as portrayed on Netflix's Making a Murderer has captivated the nation since the documentary premiered on Dec. 18, 2015. But what was first righteous indignation over claims the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department framed Avery for murder has become a little more murky: as evidence not included in the documentary has come to light and a more conflicted opinion has become the prevailing narrative.
While the certainty of Avery's guilt remains in flux, what's undeniable is the audience appetite for further installments of the series. In December, filmmaker Moira Demos told BuzzFeed News, "We do intend to continue to follow this story, the response to it, whether things change in their cases, or whether things happen in the justice system as a result of this."
At the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, CA on Sunday, filmmaker Laura Ricciardi gave an update. "We’ve had several conversations with Steven and we did record those calls with an eye towards including them in any episodes should there be future episodes." She added that they have not yet returned to Wisconsin to film additional footage.
Should they make new episodes, Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos expressed an interest in airing those installments, telling reporters at TCA, "We'll certainly take a look at it."
