“There’s a lot of people I love on Twitter, but unfortunately you can’t read those without reading deranged neo-cons telling you you should be buried under a pile of rocks,” the Girls star said on the Golden Globes red carpet.

On E!'s Golden Globes red carpet telecast on Sunday, Girls star Lena Dunham told Ryan Seacrest that she had deleted Twitter, where "people threaten my life and tell me what a cow I am," she said.

"I deleted Twitter because I'm trying to create a safer space for myself emotionally," Dunham told Seacrest after he asked her if she was going to be checking her phone for audience reaction to the Girls Season 4 premiere, which is airing on HBO while the Globes ceremony airs on NBC.

Dunham's announcement immediately caused confusion, as her Twitter account itself remains very much active. But during her interview with Seacrest, Dunham made it clear she had not deleted her Twitter account, just the Twitter app from her phone.

"I check it occasionally, but it's not the same co-dependence Twitter and I once shared," she said.

Dunham's date for the night, Girls co-star Andrew Rannells, jumped in with his own observation that Twitter is "a door to a whole lot of craziness."

"The dark side of the internet," Dunham added. "There's a lot of people I love on Twitter, but unfortunately you can't read those without reading deranged neo-cons telling you you should be buried under a pile of rocks."
