The vintage plane crashed on Penmar Golf Course about 2:20 p.m. TMZ and other media outlets reported that Ford was piloting the plane.
Los Angeles Fire Department officials said Thursday that the plane's pilot was about 70-years-old and was transported to a local hospital in "fair to moderate condition." He was "alert, conscious, and breathing" when paramedics transported him from the scene, the officials also said.
The officials did not confirm that Ford was on the plane, citing privacy laws.
Ford's publicist did not respond to BuzzFeed News' multiple requests for comment.
In audio from the Santa Monica Airport, Ford can be heard radioing about "engine failure" and an "immediate return."
Officials did not say what might have caused the crash, but a witness told KTLA that the engine "went off and started sputtering again," then "completely went off."
According to NBC Los Angeles, Ford suffered cuts, and possibly bone fractures. He was in serious condition. A witness also told NBC that two men at the golf course ran to help Ford after the crash.
Multiple local media reported that there was only one person on board the plane.
