LOS ANGELES — In a splashy media event on Tuesday, Marvel Studios announced several new films to its expanding slate of comic book movies. Studio chief Kevin Feige announced the studio's first black superhero, Black Panther, to be played by Chadwick Boseman (42, Get On Up) in a film opening Nov. 3, 2017. Soon after, Marvel will debut their first female superhero, Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers — although the studio made no mention of which actor will play that role. And Marvel Studios will debut the sci-fi fantasy saga Inhumans on Nov. 2, 2018.
Feige also announced a two-part conclusion to the Avengers saga, subtitled Infinity Gauntlet, and slated for May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019. He also confirmed the studio's worst kept secret, that Doctor Strange will launch the newest round of characters on Nov. 4, 2016 — although he did not mention if Benedict Cumberbatch has landed the role as reported on Monday. "If it were confirmed, we would have introduced him today," Feige said in a press conference after the event.
The announcement comes roughly two weeks after Warner Bros. announced a slate of nine films to follow the 2016 release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, through 2020.
The Marvel Studios slate includes:
May 1, 2015: Avengers: Age of Ultron
July 17, 2015: Ant-Man
May 6, 2016: Captain America: Civil War
Nov. 4, 2016: Doctor Strange
May 5, 2017: Guardians of the Galaxy 2
July 28, 2017: Thor: Ragnarok
Nov. 3, 2017: Black Panther
May 4, 2018: Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1
July 6, 2018: Captain Marvel
