After months of speculation, the studios announced a deal for Spider-Man to join the same cinematic universe as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor.

Marvel Studios has finally captured Spider-Man. Kind of.

In an unprecedented deal that involves two giant multi-national corporations, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios announced late Monday that the character of Spider-Man would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The character will first appear in an unspecified film from Marvel Studios, which is owned by the Walt Disney Company. Spidey will then headline his own feature film to be produced by Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal — who recently stepped down from her role as the co-chair of Sony Pictures — and released by Sony Pictures on July 28, 2017. According to the release, Sony Pictures "will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films" — but a source with knowledge of the situation has confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Andrew Garfield will not play the character moving forward and a new actor will be cast.

Sony Pictures is also moving forward with plans for spin-off movies for Spider-Man villains the Sinister Six and Venom — but the release dates for those films will likely be pushed back to accommodate the new plans for Spider-Man to join the MCU.

Developing… more soon…
