Disney announced on Thursday at its annual shareholders meeting that a sequel to the record-breaking, Oscar-winning 2013 movie Frozen is in the works.
Frozen filmmakers Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck will return to direct and Peter Del Vecho will produce. It has not been announced which actors who voiced the characters in the original will return for the sequel. The news comes a day before Frozen Fever, a spin-off short, hits theaters along with Disney's Cinderella.
"We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters," John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, said in a statement. "Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we're taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that."
Rumors about a Frozen sequel have been swirling for nearly a year, and in November 2014, Idina Menzel, who voiced Elsa, told The Telegraph another film was "in the works." However, Lee and Buck recently told BuzzFeed News a second film seemed far off since they didn't have an idea of what the storyline would be. "Until we find our way into what's next, emotionally, it will feel too big," Lee said.
