The series join Gotham as the network’s 2014-15 season starts to take shape.
The night after the trailer for Fox's buzzed about Batman prequel series Gotham blew up online, Fox announced two more of its newcomers for the 2014-2015 season from big name executive producers Lee Daniels, who's venturing into the world of musicals, and Steven Spielberg, who is behind a highly unconventional high school drama.
"This is one of the most ambitious and unorthodox shows in anyone's development this year," the network said in a statement. "It represents a completely inspired way into young soap, a comedic one-hour, a hospital show, and a (surrogate) family drama."
Daniels will produce, direct, and write Empire, alongside fellow executive producer and writer Danny Strong (of Game Change fame), who also worked with Daniels on The Butler. Fox describes the series as a family drama set in the world of a hip-hop empire that will feature both original and current music and will center on music mogul Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard). The cast also includes Taraji P. Henson as Lucious' ex-wife and business partner, Malik Yoba, Jussie Smollett, Bryshere Y. Gray, Trai Byers, Grace Gealey, Kaitlin Doubleday, and recurring star Gabourey Sidibe. Plus, Timbaland will serve as a songwriter and song producer. Brian Grazer (24, Friday Night Lights) and Francie Calfo (Those Who Kill) will also executive produce.

The network has also picked up Red Band Society from executive producers Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, and Darryl Frank of The Americans and Falling Skies. Sergio Aguero (Y Tu Mama Tambien) and Margaret Nagle (Boardwalk Empire) also executive produce and wrote the pilot of the series, which centers on a diverse group of teenagers who become unlikely allies and friends in the pediatric wing of a hospital.
Frequent Ryan Murphy collaborator Alfonso Gomez-Rejon directed the pilot of the series, which stars Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Brian "Astro" Bradley, Ciara Bravo, Griffin Gluck, Zoe Levin, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Charlie Rowe, and Nolan Sotillo.
